T.O.R.C.H. was established as a Brotherhood in 1989, a brainchild of thirteen third year medical students of the Cebu
Institute of Medicine. The organization was created as a medium to expand the sphere of medical education through exposure
to the social and health realities of the community. Its instructive consequence is multifold: it encourages social awareness,
nurtures charity, and develops technical skills, among many others. A few months later, inspired by the pioneering works of
the brotherhood, a group of nine third year medical students established the T.O.R.C.H. Sisterhood. Although distinct from
one another in administration and policy, both the Brotherhood and the Sisterhood share the same ideals and philanthropic
spirit. The group’s thrust is to “extend help to those who need it most”, with special emphasis on healthcare.
